Tuscan Architecture

Tuscan Architecture: A Return to the Italian Renaissance

Architecture and design changes with the region, just like language and cuisine. Each region has its own typicality and speciality, marking its distinctive style.

There are architectures and there are famous architectures. Tuscan architecture is world-renowned and known for its charm and chic. It has truly evolved, adapting styles from many different eras, from the Italian Renaissance to contemporary Italian designs. Right from the bridges to the mosaic tiles to large pillars and wrought-iron gates, Tuscan architecture has truly carved a niche for itself.

What makes Tuscan architecture so special and unique?

  1. Buildings. The buildings are generaly elegant but simple, like villas with clean lines and columns. Huge pillars supporting the giganic structures often characterize the outside. Though today they're built with cement, in the old days they were built with strong stone to keep a cool temperature inside.

  2. Tuscan Rooms. The rooms are designed with classical lines in mind. They typically contain fireplaces, high ceilings, earthy oranges of maroon colors, with Tuscan furniture and paintings that create the ultimate Italian harmony.

  3. Wall Treatments. Tuscan walls - both interior and exterior - are usually textured with traditional Venetian and Stucco plaster effects. The walls themselves are there to support the rest of the architectural elements like paintings and floorings.

  4. Interior Design and Furniture. Tuscan interiors are characterized by decadence, from tapestries, to ornate gold detailing, expensive china, colorful plates, stained glass, candle holders, wrought-iron objects, and heavily upholstered furniture made with expensive silks, velvets, and leather.

  5. Ceilings. Ceilings have stenciled borders, wooden beams, and paneled ceilings that sometimes contain textured medallions. These are elevated by the presence of beautiful chandeliers.

  6. Floors. Floors are usually made from terracotta, mosaic and glazed ceramic, or Italian marble. The floorings are chosen specifically to harmonize with the rest of the Tuscan decor. Tiles are generally inlayed with intricate patterns and designs.

Tuscan architecture places emphasis on beauty, detail, and harmony. Add the finishing touches - a picturesque location, a beautiful garden, and a marble fountain - and your dream Tuscan villa is ready!
